In everyday life, it has become natural to engage in multiple activities at once, such as checking messages while doing something else or watching a video while having a drink. However, multitasking is not so much about performing several tasks simultaneously as it is about constantly shifting our attention from one task to another. In this process, we can easily move through an experience without fully noticing or appreciating it. HITOMA began as a way to step away from this routine and offer a moment of single-tasking—a time to stay fully present with one experience at a time. To explore how this idea could be put into practice, HITOMA draws inspiration from the Japanese tea ceremony and the traditional tea room. Traditional Japanese tea rooms are entered through a small, low entrance, creating a clear separation between everyday life outside and the space dedicated to tea. Inspired by this spatial quality, HITOMA reinterprets the tea room as a “small tea room” where one can focus entirely on a single experience. The name HITOMA comes from the Japanese word “一間,” meaning “one room,” and reflects the idea of a space dedicated to one experience. The structure of tatami found in traditional tea rooms and the sequential flow of the tea ceremony are developed into HITOMA’s main graphic system and four-step ritual, offering users an opportunity to experience single-tasking in everyday life.
