The old Gyeongju legend of Manpasikjeok tells of a mysterious flute believed to drive away enemies and illness and calm the wind and waves. Rather than focusing on the flute’s mystical power itself, this project looks at the hopes of the people who wished for peace through the story. Their hopes are interpreted as “a wish for peace,” and carried into everyday life today. PAPAPA~ translates this idea into contemporary character design. The flute is reflected in the characters’ clothing and movements, while the flowing forms of waves are expressed through their hair and eyes. These characters extend into various graphic applications, including posters, as well as everyday objects that can be kept close and carried with you. By bringing the wish for peace once held by the people of Silla into PAPAPA~, the project hopes to offer a small sense of calm in the busy lives of people today.
